Seriously, Moffatt? I actually really liked Bill... until it was revealed that she was a lesbian. The thing is that it doesn't even fit with her character at all, much like any of the other LGBT characters on the show. The fact that she made Doctor Who history by being the first ever lesbian companion is seriously ridiculous in my opinion. I know I'm a little late on the uptake. But seriously guys, I'm kinda fed up about this. 😜
Bill is a great character. She is adventurous, curious, intelligent, stubborn (much like the Doctor), and has some humor about her. She is going to be a great companion and is a really good fit to the Twelfth Doctor having recently lost his memory of Clara and with the death of River Song. Why couldn't her being a lesbian just be left out of the equation altogether? Did we really need to have a lesbian companion? We already had a gay companion for crying out loud (i.e. Jack Harkness, if you count him). It really does not fit in with her character at all, in my opinion. I mean, I suppose I should have seen it coming with a name like Bill. But, come on! She did not need that added to her character. She will probably be down there with the lame companions such as Martha, Mickey, Harry, Dodo, and Susan on my list of companions. Knowing the filming industry, I fear that they'll focus too much on the fact that she is a lesbian. I think the only good thing about this season will be the Doctor (as always) and the return of John Simm as the Master.
She could have been a great character, but with this addition to her character really ruins the entire character development process. It's really poor character writing, which makes me really dislike her character. There is nothing more damaging to a writer's reputation than making a great character and then being all like, "Oh look, she's a lesbian!" It really just irritates me, and not just because I already hate that LGBT things are everywhere in shows and movies these days. It's because of the poor character building on the writer's part. It would be like grabbing a cup of coffee that you expect to have cream and sugar after having told the waitress specifically how much you want of each, but then once you have it on the table and you take a sip you come to find out that there's actually salt and corn starch mixed in it which is not at all what was supposed to be in it. So then you now have a perfectly good cup of coffee, ruined by salt and corn starch. That is what Bill is as a character, a ruined cup of coffee with salt and corn starch. 😛 In my opinion, if there is going to be a character that is LGBT... make it obvious. It should be apparent from their actions and their mannerisms. Stop hiding it and then have a big reveal, it's just poor writing. With good character development, things aren't just random. I personally hate the whole entire thing and I don't like having it in there to begin with because the morals are just wrong and sinful, but it just makes it even worse when the character development for it is completely awful. I'd rather know right away so that I can immediately know not to like that character. 😜 Don't tease me with a good character and then ruin them. 😝
